How do you propagate basil?

What do you think I did the other day? I “stole” a basil twig from a friend’s harden. Well of course I asked him before that … or at least I told him. Of course it was probably easier to go to the supermarket and buy a bag of basil seeds, but doing it this way my basil will have a story behind it. And you know how much I love stories.                 You can do it for yourself, but I’m sure some people will appreciate it if they will receive it as a gift (like me, for example). Which one do you want to learn first how to make?

Transform those big booze gift bags into small cute ones

A gift that never gets old is a bottle of wine (or Garonne, Campari, Martini – for the ladies). Of course I am not an exception. I often receive such gifts and I also give it to people who drink it.

Consequently in my house there is a drawer full with booze gift bags. Maybe you think I regift it when buying a bottle of wine for someone, but I always buy it in the last minute so I have no choice but to buy an new gift bag. And so the content of my drawer instead of shrinking it just gets bigger and bigger with each passing birthday.

This year I bought a few small gifts. You know: strong essences are kept in small containers. And I thought that than buying new gift bags, I can transform those old booze gift bags into smaller cute ones. Some may say that such a bag doesn’t cost more than a nickle, but why waste money when we have the perfect solution at home?

And because it is not hard to make such a transformation, I decided that this will be a photo tutorial. You’ll understand only from pictures, you are a smart person! Continue reading »

DIY Christmas paper ornament

As you’ve probably noticed, there’s very little time before Christmas. But I did noticed this too late, and therefore I  haven’t even started the preparations. So last week I went shopping for various tree decorations. Of course the supermarket was very crowded and don’t even get me started about the enormous prices they have during this time of the year.

So I’ve decided that instead of buying new decorations I will use some from the last year and I will also make some new ones. You know, to make it a little different. And what cheaper material you know besides paper? I “visited” my childhood memories when I was using this material to create various masterpieces for school. Of course I photographed every step to show you how it’s done.

DIY Covered buttons

I often need to embellish a project, be it a pillowcase, a blanket or a clothing item. One of my favorite methods is using buttons. These tiny and seemingly insignificant objects can give a splash of color and elegance to many things.

Many times I was in a bit of a trouble because I have not found the right buttons. Yes, there are a lot of buttons in the market but I don’t have time to go out for hours looking for the perfect button. But one day I found the best solution: fabric covered buttons. It was a great idea and I could not explain to myself why I haven’t thought about it sooner.

You can also purchase kits to make your own fabric covered buttons, but it costs around 13 lei / 6 buttons which seems too much. My method is as simple as using the kit, but muuuuuuuch cheaper.

I am too lazy

Yes, I admit, lately I transformed myself from the person willing to always create something in a totally different person who’s not in the mood for anything.

Kitchen labels

Several years have passed since I bought some spice jars from Ikea and I can say they successfully reign in my kitchens. They are a very simple way to keep your kitchen organized. I think you are also sick of tons of bags for which you never find a right place and that break or get wet before finishing the content. It’s true, these jars take up more space but I like having everything within reach.

And because they looked ugly with my old handwritten labels, I decided to make my own collection of labels.

DIY mini flags

The first time I saw these little flags was during high school, at a friend’s birthday. They were the flags of various countries, they didn’t fit in the picture but I stared at them absolutely fascinated by how beautiful these decorations were.

Since then we have seen it everywhere and somehow it has lost it’s charm. It’s part of the landscape and … that’s about it. But they are trivial just because everywhere you look it’s the same pattern.

So I thought: if they are so simple, wouldn’t be fascinating to have such flags for various occasions? Well, they probably already exists. But why spend money on something you could do it yourself?

And because Valentine’s Day was just around the corner, I decided to make some for this occasion.

Pop tab bracelet

The idea for this bracelet is not mine. I admit , it was more an imitation. And I will explain you why.

DSC044344

Talking with a friend the other day he told me that if he would come to see what I have around the house, he would surely throw alooooot of things.

I am convinced that this is so, but for me they all have a utility at one point.

And as we stood there talking, I was playing with a soda can and I was thinking what could I make from it to demonstrate him that not everything should be discarded. I did not come up with any idea in my head so I decided to look for one on the internet. I found a few pictures, but nothing to my liking.

Then I came across a picture that just fascinated me: a pop tab bracelet. It was not what I was looking for, but I began to ” unravel ” the picture and try to figure out how it was made.

Not having multiple pop tabs, later I discussed the project with my husband and what  do you know? He had a few pop tabs laying around the house( god knows why … ) .

And earlier today I got to work.

It didn’t take me very long and I promise that when I will master the technique I will make a tutorial to teach you.

For it I used 20 pop tabs, but this depends on your wrist, and almost a meter of ribbon.

I’m already working on pop tab bracelet No. 2.

Cannot wait to post pictures of the upcoming ones.

How it all started: napkin technique

What do you do on a rainy day when you’re not in the mood for anything?

You waste your time on the internet.

That’s how i developed my passion for handmade things. ‘Surfing’ various websites I found a forum about different techniques of quilling, decoupage and knitting that puts this question in my head:why can’t I do something useful with my time?

I think it’s simple, I have no imagination. But wait, I have plenty of imagination!

I thought I had no no time. But if I give up one hour of internet surfing and 1 hour in front of the  TV, I realized I have like 2 hours per day free ! !

Maybe you’re thinking: why? The answer is simple: for you.

The sand box

             Every season has something special.

I love autumn because it brings us so many fruits, I love winter cause it’s the giving holiday and I adore spring because that’s when all the trees bloom and the town is full of different scents.

But I can truly say that my favorite season is summer.

Yes, I know it’s unbearably hot.

Yes, I know it’s  the loudest season.

But summer has that something special that fills my heart with happiness every year: the seaside. I look forward walking down the beach, feeling the wet sand under my feet, run towards the waves or just relaxing under the sun.

Everything changes

We all heard the expression: “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed”.

I can say this expression dictates my life. Before I throw something away I think twice about how I can transform it into something useful.

But this time I sorted it out immediately. I lost an earring so I knew I had to do something with the remaining one.

Trinkets with love

First of all, I have to explain to you what a “martisor” is.

Martisor is an old Romanian fest celebrated on March the 1st, which according to the old calendar was also considered as the beginning of the new year. In fact “martisor” is actually a red and white string that people in my country attach to their clothes and wear it till the end of March when we tie it to a fruit-tree. It is said that if a dove comes and picks it up, you will have love in your live all year long.

Nowadays we tie that string to almost everything and so we can call it our “martisor“. Usually it is a brooch or just a simple trinket.  In some regions of Romania, women give it to men. But in my region, men give it to women. But we all love to share our love and so now both women and men show their appreciation for somebody by giving something symbolic on this beloved holiday.

And because I admit I am a child inside, when this little trinkets appear on the market I am like a kid inside a candy shop.

To me not only snowdrops mark the beginning of spring but also the lovely trinkets that you can find anywhere in this holiday’s eve. Million models in different colors, available to all of us. It usually takes me forever to choose the perfect “martisor” that I give people close to me.

Why do I collect corks?

For some time I found another thing to collect:corks. And because we like to drink a glass of wine from time to time we collected a few in this past year.

DSC02028-slider

Already some of my friends have learned that corks don’t end up in the trash anymore. They didn’t understand very well why, but friends aren’t here to pop question after question but to help. Even now sometimes they ask me “What are you doing with them?!” but they only received vague answers, because frankly I did not know very well what to do with them either. But I knew for sure that I will find at least one utility. And then the ideas started to flow.

Today I will show you the easiest three things you can do using them: Continue reading »
